Certifications
Why be a Padi certified diver?
Padi is the most recognized name in diving. With a Padi certification you have the knowledge and ability to dive worldwide without having a professional with you.
Courses
Open Water (1st Level of Certification)
The beginning level of certification involves a 5 chapter text book, a DVD, multiple pool sessions, and 4 certification checkout dives.
Classroom/bookwork sessions are set up on a schedule that fits your needs. We try to have a flexible schedule available for students since as we all know no-one runs on a set schedule these days. And after all isn’t this supposed to be fun … not work. Therefore, Great Lakes Diving to some degree allows the student to set the schedule of when they can start and complete the course.
Open Water lessons can be done start to finish with us at our location;
or,
partially, by doing any combination of classroom, pool work or check out dives with us or elsewhere.
See prices below.
What You Will Need
To start your class you will need a Padi Open Water Crew Pack (class materials), free time for classroom sessions, pool sessions, and open water sessions, and let’s not forget the most important one … time for ”Homework”. Yes we know this is supposed to be fun and homework doesn’t sound like fun but … we want to make sure you understand and retain the knowledge so you can enjoy your new found pastime.
The only gear you will need to own for your lessons is a mask, fins, snorkel, boots and gloves. These are the items you would want to take on vacation. All other gear is provided for you free of charge.
Minimun Age: 10
What Do Lessons Cost?
Fully local at our location:
Complete course: All texts, class, pool, lake work, dive tables (either tables or eRDP/ml dive calculator) is $234. Private one on one lessons are at $350.
Optional version: Text without tables but with course on "How to choose and use a dive computer" is $255
Referral to a PADI dive center elsewhere:
You do classroom and pool work with us and finish your open water check out dives elsewhere, the cost is $185. Off season or private one on one lessons are at $234. Cost with computer course $206.
Partially at our location:
You do your classroom and pool work elsewhere and finish your check out dives with us, the cost is $95.
Online:
Padi e-learning: You do your classroom work online, then come to us to finish by doing your pool work and check out dives, the cost is $114 (we also give you a class review if desired at no additional cost). Private one on one lessons are at $194.
e-learning variations:
You purchase your e-learning from us, which involves you doing your classroom work online and finish your pool work and check out dives also with us, the cost is $234.
Classroom sessions are held at Great Lakes Diving / The Scuba Diver Store.
Pool sessions are held at our private heated pool.
Open water work is held at our private lake 25 minutes from The Scuba Diver Store.
** Please note that if the season, your schedule or desire, necessitates one on one, (private lessons) the price is $234 for referral class types. $350 for regular classes fully done at our location. Private lessons are 1, 2 or 3 people; ie, less than a group of 4 or more students.
Private lessons are always available to meet your needs if your desire, schedule or deadline requires it. Otherwise we strive to schedule students into groups of 6. During the slower winter season a group of 6 or so may not be possible, at which time we will discuss with you a mutually acceptable price and scheduling solution.
Equipment Required
You will be required to bring your personal gear and log book to all pool sessions and open water work. Wet suit, BC, regulators, hood and tanks will be provided at the site so you do not need to transport those items.
Advanced Open Water (2nd level of Certification)
Why become an Advanced Open Water Diver (AOW)?
As in everything, more experience makes you more comfortable. After the five dives you do in Advanced Open Water you will find yourself enjoying diving even more than when you had the first adrenaline rush in Open Water.
Padi's Adventures In Diving program offers a number of possibilities for Certifications: Adventure Diver and Advanced Open Water Diver as well as many Specialty courses are available.
What do I need for AOW?
The prior Certification level ...Padi Open Water Diver Certification (or the equivalent from another organization).
Minimum age: 15 or 12 for Junior Advanced Open Water Diver

This includes a wetsuit, hood, BC, weights, as well as tanks for the dives. Students needing only partial gear rental can discuss that with the staff. Equipment will be delivered to the sites for you.
What do my five dives entail?
Padi requires that two of the dives be Underwater Navigator, and Deep Adventure dive; beyond that the other three are at your choice. | What does it cover? The online version of the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course will include knowledge development for the two required topics, Deep and Underwater Navigation Dives along with five of the most popular elective dives. These include Night Diver, Peak Performance Buoyancy, Wreck Diver, Boat Diver and Underwater Naturalist. As with the PADI Open Water Diver course, the entire PADI Adventures in Diving manual will be available online to divers enrolled in the course as an alternative to the paper textbook. Experience real adventure and be one step closer to Master Scuba Diver, the ultimate non-professional certification in recreational diving. You must be a PADI Open Water Diver before participating in any inwater training. How does it work? After enrolling, PADI's eLearning system presents you with interactive presentations that include videos, audio, graphics and reading. Short quizzes let you gauge your progress, and review and correct anything you might happen to miss. This lets you move through the program efficiently and at your own pace. What does it cost? The PADI Advanced Open Water Course online is $120 US nonrefundable. The fee covers the knowledge development training as well as unlimited access to the entire PADI Adventures in Diving manual online. Your PADI Dive Center or Resort will charge an additional fee for the inwater portion of your certification. You may want to purchase additional equipment through your PADI Dive Center or Resort as well. How long do you have to complete the eLearning course? The eLearning course will be available for one year from the time of course registration. Why does the course only cover these dives?
